Path of Communication
Welcome to the Communicate Japan project. My goal is to learn more about communication by focusing on education, language study, and travel in Japan and wherever my life leads me next. I want to share with you the lessons I’ve learned on this journey so far. Let’s get the conversation started.
In the past couple years of teaching in Japan I have come to notice that one of the most valuable skills for a more fulfilling life is communication. Communication is not only learning and using the language of those you interact with; it is also developing an open heart and mind to understand other people. Assuming you already know and understand someone or a group of people kills communication. Making assumptions is our brain’s way of saving energy and keeping our life and the things in it simple and neat. It has its value. But the awareness of our assumptions as, well, just that, assumptions, is the start to deepening our understanding of each other. When we question our assumptions, we open up our minds to communicate with the world around us. This is an on-going process of building assumptions and breaking them down to continually come to know the world and our place in it. The need to communicate better is important now as it always has been.
